THREE DIGICO D5S MAKE FIVE GIGS IN FIVE DAYS A BREEZE
Unit 4 - the specialist outside broadcast truck built around a DiGiCo D5 Live console by Belgian company DB Videoproductions - proved the worth of its excellent facilities when given the task of providing a live to air audio mix for Flemish radio station Q-Music’s promotional tour.
Taking place in mid-August, the tour took in five Belgian cities in five days, visiting Sint-Truiden, Brugge, Gent, Mechelen and St. Niklaas. Featuring performances by a range of artists - including Level 42, Sister Sledge, ABC and heavy metallers Udo - each show was a free outdoor event and broadcast live on Q-Music.
DB Videoproductions and Unit 4 were brought in to provide a live mix for the live radio transmission, as well as making a multitrack recording.
The show’s live audio production utilised another pair of DiGiCo D5s on FOH and monitors, supplied by hire company Soundfield, with two stage racks and three local racks. Fibre optic multicores were used for the PA and monitors, with a MADI link for the Unit 4 console.
“It was a pleasure to mix on this tour,” says DB Videoproductions Unit Manager (Audio) Ivan Mangelschots, who was also acting as principal sound engineer on the Unit 4 truck.
“Especially so because our D5 connected without a problem to the D5s on the main production. We only needed to make two MADI and sync connections from their stage racks and we were ready to sound check. Within 30 minutes of arriving on site, we were ready for the show.”
Ivan continues: “This was the first time that we had connected three DiGiCo D5s and it worked perfectly, aided by an excellent working relationship with Soundfield. All the shows went really smoothly and demonstrated how quality equipment will always work to the advantage of a production.”
The D5-based Unit 4 truck is designed to operate either individually for audio broadcast / recording, or in tandem with one of DB Videoproductions video-based OB trucks.
