DIGICO D5T12 GIVES MORE FOR LESS TO THEATRE PRODUCTIONS

We all know size really does matter, especially where generating more revenue depends upon it. And nowhere is this more important than for theatre productions. Every seat that can be sold is important, so being able to reduce the footprint of the Front of House area is extremely desirable: welcome DiGiCo D5T12.

The D5T12 is a hybrid of the already successful D5T digital theatre mixing system, giving 12 faders, rather than the standard eight, to provide more VCF control within the standard console surface and footprint.
“In recent times sound designers have been under ever increasing pressure to decrease the footprint of the Front of House control area,” explains Bobby Aitken, sound designer for Dirty Dancing, which opens in the West End in October. “Every single seat removed for the mixer can cost the producer around £17,000 a year in lost sales.

“The mixing of musical theatre usually requires that the sound engineer has more than eight faders available in a single bank. DiGiCo’s optional TC (Theatre Masters) Controller addresses this issue beautifully by offering 16 faders in a row. However, it does require the removal of an additional four seats. We decided that that we could mix Dirty Dancing on twelve faders and approached DiGiCo with the concept of redesigning the D5T surface to allow this. The resulting hardware offers 12 faders in the fader-bay and eight above.

“We are very popular with the producers!”
